Motherboard – The Core of the computer, all parts of the computer connect to it, controls everything about the system and what’s in the system.

· All parts of the computer connect to the motherboard
· Communication between components must be done through the motherboard
· The Motherboard determines what your computer is capable of and its Performance
· The Motherboard – can also be called a system board or Main board
· The Motherboards – Form factor determines Size and shape, connector locations, and screw holes locations that determine Computer Chassis / computer case type, for the motherboard to be mounted and installed to.

Form Factor

The Motherboards form Factor refers to the size and placing of mounting screws as well at the placing of certain component inputs and connections, the form factor is very important to consider when choosing what type of computer case you are using, if you pick a case that only fits one type of form factor then you must also pick a motherboard the matches that form factor as well

Many of today’s computer case now come able to accommodate multiple motherboard form factors, allowing you to pick whatever motherboard you want but checking to make sure your computer case allows this is key. If you chose to use a computer case from a name brand company like Dell, Hp, or Sony then you must consider that they are built to support a proprietary form factor meaning you will need to purchase a motherboard from them as well

Note: There are ways to rig your proprietary computer cases to use other form factors but in most cases it’s hardly worth the effort.
Throughout the years motherboard form factors has evolved and change allowing more advanced technologies to be used and common features like audio and video to be integrated in to the motherboard it’s self  what follows is  a list of the common form factors of today’s computers

Operating System View Where the Kernel Stops and the Rest begins

1. The Core View – an operating system on the lowest level a platform made up of specific libraries and architecture providing and infrastructure for programs to be built on and interact with each other – This grouping we call the Kernel you can find an example of the Kernel being used as an operating system when you consider hardware being ran by embedded systems.

2. The Computer user view – a software package that provides a user interface, desktop environment, and groups of software applications, such as a web browser, media player, and text document tools. Also allowing end-user to add more software applications. This is much different from the core view but would also be considered the operating system

3. The Great Divide View – This is where the System Call Interface Layer defined the Line between Kernel and Applications.

Conclusion – The Operating system can be defined by the resources need to run your applications if only the Kernel is need then the Kernel is the Operating system If more than the Kernel is needed Like the X window system then the Operating system is X + Kernel
You also can consider anything on the other side of the System Call Interface is Kernel while the other side is application

Me, I’m Joe nobody. I’m that guy down the street that works on computers, has bills to pay, and wonders what that squeaky noise is coming from the side of his car.

I have my own Radio Tech podcast and enjoy using social media tools the likes of Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

I love computers and their operating systems, always will. Knowing how to use them has produced extra income for my family, and provides me with a journey both hard and easy, stressful and fun. The best part is, it’s not over by a long shot! So much to learn, to try, to fail, and to succeed. Technology still continues to give me many tough challenges ready for conquering, It doesn’t seem to matter if I use Windows, Macintosh, or Linux, each experience is different, each experience is worthwhile.

My material is based on down to earth straight talk. Just you and I discussing Linux from a basic stand point and the basic needs of non-power users, with the hopes of becoming a more advanced user over time.
If you pay attention you will notice hints that could saving or making you money, knowledge is power and its also a good income provider.

There will never be an end to what you can do! As technology grows and your interest grows, your needs from your computer will also grow. It all depends on you. Take as little or as much from technology as you want!

• (Although all operating systems have many things in common, when learning Linux it’s important to clear your mind of the past, and embrace Linux as a new experience.)

• Before starting take a walk this will help you to clear your mind,

• while on that walk pick up a bottle of Cinnamon to keep next to your computer desk the smell of Cinnamon will boost your brain functions.

• Lastly with the Cinnamon nearby take 4 deep breathe through your nose and out your mouth this will help sooth you and prepare you to Learn.

Before you can move forward you need to know yourself. One of the biggest mistakes we make in life is trying to run before knowing how to walk, and trying to walk before we can crawl. We need to break that habit now! Building a solid foundation now will make learning advanced topics later much easier, this stands true in all things in life no matter the subject.

Sure you could skip key topics and be okay, until one day that basic topic becomes very important, and then you realize just how many holes you have in your foundation causing you to crumble. So let’s forgo that embarrassment and take this Journey one step at a time.

An Open Letter to Hobbyists

To me, the most critical thing in the hobby market right now is the lack of good software courses, books and software itself. Without good software and an owner who understands programming, a hobby computer is wasted. Will quality software be written for the hobby market?

Almost a year ago, Paul Allen and myself, expecting the hobby market to expand, hired Monte Davidoff and developed Altair BASIC. Though the initial work took only two months, the three of us have spent most of the last year documenting, improving and adding features to BASIC. Now we have 4K, 8K, EXTENDED, ROM and DISK BASIC. The value of the computer time we have used exceeds $40,000.

The feedback we have gotten from the hundreds of people who say they are using BASIC has all been positive. Two surprising things are apparent, however, 1) Most of these “users” never bought BASIC (less than 10% of all Altair owners have bought BASIC), and 2) The amount of royalties we have received from sales to hobbyists makes the time spent on Altair BASIC worth less than $2 an hour.

Why is this? As the majority of hobbyists must be aware, most of you steal your software. Hardware must be paid for, but software is something to share. Who cares if the people who worked on it get paid?

Is this fair? One thing you don’t do by stealing software is get back at MITS for some problem you may have had. MITS doesn’t make money selling software. The royalty paid to us, the manual, the tape and the overhead make it a break-even operation. One thing you do do is prevent good software from being written. Who can afford to do professional work for nothing? What hobbyist can put 3-man years into programming, finding all bugs, documenting his product and distribute for free? The fact is, no one besides us has invested a lot of money in hobby software. We have written 6800 BASIC, and are writing 8080 APL and 6800 APL, but there is very little incentive to make this software available to hobbyists. Most directly, the thing you do is theft.

What about the guys who re-sell Altair BASIC, aren’t they making money on hobby software? Yes, but those who have been reported to us may lose in the end. They are the ones who give hobbyists a bad name, and should be kicked out of any club meeting they show up at.

Welcome Friend for years I have wanted to learn Linux often I would try but failed to follow thru and gave up. This did not sit well with me I felt that I needed to meet this challenge so I welcome you to my ongoing Freshly Minted Linux journey.

Why the Title Freshly Minted Linux Journey?

When I decided to learn Linux I started with the Linux distro called Ubuntu 10.10 you can go to my Youtube channel and see some of the videos I made there. As time went on I started to look into other Linux distro to explore, that’s when I found Linux Mint, and this version of Linux is based on Ubuntu but has added development that seems to be a great asset to new Linux users so Linux Mint will be the base Linux distro that I will use to learn with although I will touch and explore other Linux distros as well so I named my show( Freshly Minted) because I am new to Linux Mint and the (A Linux Journey) because I will Journey and look at Linux as a whole. Big thank you to Bob for coming up with the name.

YouTube has reached agreements with Sony, Warner Bros. and Universal,

Other studios, including Paramount, 20th Century Fox and Walt Disney, have declined to join YouTube over concerns that Google has not done enough to protect against online piracy
.Viacom Inc. is currently suing YouTube for copyright infringement.
Google TV delivers online video, including YouTube’s content, to the living room TV via the Internet. But that service is considered poor at best.

Story One: Do You Need 3D?

Panasonic and Sony have tried many times to convince consumers that 3D TV is a necessity.

A new study pushed out by the NPD Group, says consumers know more about 3D TV now. More than ever did, but still are not convinced of why they would need one.

A year and a half into the 3D TV kicked off 45 percent of people who said they would not buy a 3D TV was due to cost stating it’s too expensive.
And 42 percent of people said they do not want to wear glasses. That’s an increase in both categories.

6 months earlier only 37 percent said price was the inhibiting factor in their purchase, and 32 percent said wearing glasses was. But interestingly, the increase of people who were hung up on 3D glasses was larger than people who thought the TVs were too expensive. Story Link

Story Two: “Avatar” director James Cameron is expanding his 3D vision

and has teamed up with “Avatar” cameraman Vince Pace to form a new venture, to drive the widespread adoption of 3D technology in episode driven television, sports and advertising.

They said they wanted to “realize 3D’s full potential as a creative and powerful storytelling and live broadcast tool.”
Cameron predicted 3D would become a major player in television programming within five years.

Cameron was reported saying:
3D is just how all broadcast entertainment will be done. Scripted and unscripted — we haven’t seen anything yet that doesn’t have a great degree of value added by being in 3D,
He said the fledgling 3D television industry was caught in a chicken-and-egg situation similar to the movie industry six years ago when theater operators and filmmakers argued there were not enough films, or 3D theaters to justify a change.

The 3D technology developed by Cameron and Pace has brought in $4.7 billion in box office receipts and been used in sports and concert productions worldwide. These include “Avatar” — which grossed a record $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office — “Tron: Legacy” and a U2 concert film. Read More

Story 1: Bloomberg launches $2.99 iPad subscription

which is free for existing subscribers of the print version.
The free app includes an initial free edition of the magazine to review, including a video on how the cover art was designed and audio of Tom Keene’s Econochat and a Charlie Rose interview.
Apple first released its in app subscription plans for iPad in February, resulting in a backlash of complaint from a variety of publishers. It was also widely reported that Google would take away Apple’s subscription business with its cheaper, web-centric One Pass program.

Microsoft wants you to say no to using “homebrew solutions” to force an upgrade for Windows Phone 7 devices.

Eric Hautala says in a blog post. “As an engineer and a gadget lover, I totally understand the impulse to tinker,”  he also Says  ”But my strong advice is: wait.”

Microsoft is currently rolling out an upgrade to Windows Phone 7 devices that will bring features like cut and paste functionality.

The first update is for the device registry, while the second update adds the features like cut and paste, fuller marketplace search, and different background images while connected to Wi-Fi.
